Have you ever walked into a room and immediately felt either drained or uplifted? That’s because energy is constantly being exchanged between people, whether we realise it or not. The Third Insight from The Celestine Prophecy reveals that everything is made up of energy, and the way we interact with others can either enhance or deplete our personal energy levels.

When we feel low on energy, we unconsciously try to steal it from others. This happens through subtle (or not so subtle) power struggles, which James Redfield calls Control Dramas. Understanding these dynamics is key to reclaiming your own energy and breaking free from toxic interactions.

What Are Control Dramas?

Control Dramas are unconscious behavioural patterns we develop, often in childhood, as a way to gain energy and attention. They create a cycle where one person takes energy from another rather than connecting to a higher, limitless source of energy.

The four main Control Dramas are:

1. The Intimidator – Controlling Through Fear

This person dominates others through aggression, criticism, or force. They steal energy by making others feel small or afraid. If you’ve ever felt anxious around someone and found yourself walking on eggshells, you might have encountered an Intimidator.

2. The Interrogator – Controlling Through Scrutiny

Interrogators steal energy by questioning, criticising, or undermining others. They make you feel like you’re not good enough, keeping you on edge as you try to prove yourself.

3. The Aloof – Controlling Through Mystery

Aloofs act distant or withdrawn, forcing others to chase their attention. By making themselves seem hard to read, they pull energy from those who try to figure them out.

4. The Poor Me – Controlling Through Guilt

This person plays the victim to make others feel responsible for their happiness. They drain energy by making people feel guilty or obligated to help them.

How to Identify Control Dramas in Yourself and Others

Recognising these patterns is the first step to breaking free. Ask yourself:

  • Do I feel constantly drained in certain relationships?

  • Do I act out any of these Control Dramas when I feel insecure?

  • Do people in my life use guilt, criticism, intimidation, or withdrawal to gain energy?

By observing interactions with awareness, you can stop engaging in these energy struggles and redirect your focus to a higher energy source.

Breaking Free and Reclaiming Your Energy

Instead of taking energy from others, the key is to tap into a higher source—whether that’s through meditation, nature, prayer, or creative pursuits. Here are some steps to break the cycle:

  • Detach from energy-draining relationships – If someone constantly takes your energy, set firm boundaries or distance yourself.

  • Raise your vibration – Do things that uplift your energy naturally, such as exercise, deep breathing, or listening to music that inspires you.

  • Practice mindfulness – Observe your own patterns without judgment and make conscious choices in interactions.

  • Send energy instead of taking it – Compliment others, share positivity, and engage with love rather than control.

When you stop seeking energy from others and instead cultivate your own, life flows more easily. You attract people and situations that align with your higher self, and drama naturally falls away.
